Maroon and Tomato Clownfish

There are two types of Maroon clowns. The regular Maroons are dark red with white stripes and then there is the Gold Stripe Maroon. Those are a dark red and with gold stripes. Both types of clowns start out with white strips but the gold stripe will develope the gold color as it gets older. Some say it is because of their diets but they eat the same food.

They live in anemones in the wild but do not need one to live in home tanks unless you have very aggressive fish. These fish themselves are very aggressive towards other fish so watch out with their tank mates. These fish will breed fairly easy in the home tank. That is if you have a male and female that has paired up. Just make sure you have enough live rock in the tank to make them fill safe.

The maroons do not get along well with other clownfish. They will fight with them and some of the time cause enough stress to the other fish that it will die. If you want to have more than one kind of clown fish you will need a large tank and a clown like the tomato. This fish gets along better with other clownfish. But be sure you add them all at the same time.

The min. size tank for any one of these fish is 30 gallons. If you plan on having more than one make sure the tank is big enough. Example: 2-3 60 gallon 4-6 you need at least 100 gallon. With alot of live rock so the can feel safe and not have to fight over a spot to call home.

As always think of your tank and fish like a part of your family and make sure you are in it for the long haul.

Clownfish

Clownfish are some the most interesting fish you can add to your aquarium. The Ocellaris Clownfish is one of the easier clown fish to start with. Sometimes known as the false percula the Ocellaris Clownfish is much more common in fish stores than the Percula Clownfish. The easiest way to tell the two apart is the black line that outlines them, the Percula Clownfish has a much thicker black outline.

The Ocellaris well be very happy in your aquarium and if you have a mated pair then breeding should also be very easy. The first thing you should ask when your at the fish store is if there clownfish was tank raised or wild caught. It’s best if you buy tank raised fish, they are hardier and easier to keep healthly. Also that way we can do a little part to save the reefs.
